Local issues

I have lived in Birmingham all my life and am proud to have served as MP for Birmingham Selly Oak since 1992.

I have spent many years as a councillor, and a number as Chair of Housing, on Birmingham City Council.   I appreciate that, for many people, the most pressing matters are not whether we should embrace the single currency or how we should structure higher education, but how we are going to make the streets safer for our children to play in or ensuring that our homes are in good repair.

Of course, I believe that national policy has a great impact on our quality of life in Birmingham, but I also work to try to solve those problems that many people face day to day.

Want to know what's going on in your area?
Check the "In Your Area Database". This is a Government service which allows you to see key Government facts and figures for your area.

By typing in your postcode, you can find out what the Government's been doing where you live. Some of the figures are very local, others are regional.

Local Councillors

Your councillors provide a link between you and the various Departments, whether you have a problem with housing, your children's school, overgrown trees, rubbish not being collected or are not happy with an aspect of Council policy - your local councillor will offer advice and representation.
