News from Lynne Jones MP

I issued the following press release on 12.01.2005

ACTION FOR SICK CHILDREN CAMPAIGN

Lynne Jones has tabled the following Parliamentary Motion to highlight the campaign by the charity Action for Sick Children.

The MP said, “Parents should not have to struggle to pay the cost of parking whilst visiting a child in hospital.   I applaud the Action for Sick Children campaign and I am calling on trusts with high parking charges to replace unnecessary parking costs with family-friendly provisions for parents who need to spend time with a child in hospital.  I also want to see public transport radically improved to assist parents who are not in a position to drive.”

ACTION FOR SICK CHILDREN PARK THE CHARGES CAMPAIGN

That this House supports the Park the Car, Park the Charges Campaign by Action for Sick Children; notes that a telephone audit of 67 hospital trusts done by Action for Sick Children revealed that some hospital trusts are charging flat rates of around £2 an hour, bringing a 24-hour stay to around £50, whilst some trusts only charge £1 per day, and that the average parking charge for a 24 hour stay was £8.50 with more than a third of respondents charging more than £10 per day; notes that for many parents, when a child needs hospital treatment, public transport does not allow them to juggle work commitments and looking after other children; and therefore calls on the Government both to radically improve public transport and to direct hospital trusts to replace unnecessary parking costs with family-friendly provisions for parents visiting a child in hospital.
