"Stop the pre-payment meter rip-off"

Last week, the energy regulator OFGEM highlighted the overcharging of millions of those on pre-payment meters and similar overcharging of 4m electricity customers in areas not connected to the gas main.

Lynne Jones MP said:

  • "I think this is wrong and had already switched my own supplies to Ebico, which charges all customers the same rates, however they pay.  I’m very pleased that the new Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband has agreed that it’s time to put a stop to pre-payment meter users being ripped off.

"The Government has made it clear to the big six utility companies that it expects them to take action.  And if the companies don’t act, we'll bring forward legislation to prevent unfair pricing difficulties.”

    Notes for editors:

      • Labour's objective is a climate change policy that is fair and an energy policy that is sustainable.

      • Last week, the energy regulator OFGEM highlighted the overcharging of millions of those on pre-payment meters and similar overcharging of 4m electricity customers in areas not connected to the gas main.

      • This is unacceptable. OFGEM have set a statutory consultation period until December 1st.

      • The Government has made it clear to the big six utility companies that it expects a quicker action or explanation to remedy these abuses.

      • If the companies don’t act ahead of Ofgem’s process, Ed Miliband has instructed officials that they should be prepared to consult on legislation to prevent unfair pricing difficulties.
