Press Release: ‘three planet’ lifestyle
I issued the following press release on 3 November 2006:
MP attempts to juggle ‘three planet’ lifestyle
Lynne Jones MP may be used to juggling her workload but WWF challenged her to juggle three planets to highlight how everyone in the UK is using more than their fair share of natural resources, and emitting more CO2 than the planet can absorb.
WWF held an event recently in Parliament to raise awareness about its One Planet Living ® (1) Campaign which aims to make sustainable living easy, affordable and attractive.
WWF says Government has an important role to play in helping people live within the planet’s natural capacity. Our homes, our communities and our lifestyles – what we buy and consume, the energy we use and what we do with our waste, all have an impact on our environment. If everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK as a whole, we would need three planets to support us. People in Birmingham are living a 2.9 planet lifestyle.
Lynne said: “There is so much we can do in our everyday lives to reduce our impact on the environment: starting with simple steps like cutting down on using our cars for short journeys and switching our televisions off from standby. In parliament I am working on the Environment Committee’s enquiry into what needs to be done to help people take further measures that will cut down on our CO2 emissions whilst maintaining and even improving the quality of our lives.
“WWF and more recently the Stern Review have shown how we must reduce our impact on the environment in order to safeguard the planet for future generations. I am pleased the Government will include a Climate Changet Bill in the Queen’s Speech and will commit to targets to stabilise and reduce the UK’s Ecological Footprint”.
