Announcement of new GP led Health Centre in Selly Oak and new GP practice on Poplar Road

21 January 2009

Since my previous posting on 29 July 2008 on GP Access and Polyclinics, South Birmingham PCT have outlined plans for two new services:

The Health Centre (GP led)

The new GP led health centre will be located at Selly Oak Health Centre based on Katie Road in Selly Oak.   This is set to open in June 2009 and will take shape alongside longer term plans to strengthen links with existing services in particular urgent and emergency care.

This site will offer:

  • Opening hours between 8am to 8 pm, 7 days a week
  • GP and Nurse services for registered and unregistered patients
  • Book-able appointments for registered and unregistered patients
  • An easy accessible site with good transport links for the population of South Birmingham
  • General GP services as well as nurses, reception staff and community services
  • Urgent appointments for a range of need e.g. sprains, rashes, bites, emergency contraception
  • Travel health advice
  • Signposting to other services as required
  • General advice information and health checks
  • Good links to other community based services such as physiotherapy

The GP Practice

The new GP practice is set to open in April 2009 and be located at Poplar Road Health Centre in Kings Heath.

The practice will offer:

  • General GP services as well as nurses, reception staff and usual community services for up to 6,000 registered patients
  • Extended opening hours
  • Customised services to groups such as for Nursing Home residents and public  health sessions
  • Support to planning health services through something which is called practice based commissioning
  • Accredited training for practice staff once the practice reaches that stage
